Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
The capture of carbon, for example from the flue gases of a coal-fired power station, and subsequent storage of the carbon in stable (usually underground) conditions to prevent it from escaping into the atmosphere. This is promoted as a means to continue to burn fossil fuels while reducing the output of greenhouse gases.

Carbon Credits
Carbon Credits were created as part of the Kyoto Protocol as a system to allow organizations, both commercial and governmental, to buy and sell emissions in order to meet standards. Basically, if one party emits less than allowed, they can then sell that excess capacity as a "Carbon Credit" to another party who has been unable to cut their emissions.

Carbon Offset
A carbon offset is a credit that an individual or organization can purchase to negate a carbon footprint, thereby achieving carbon neutrality. Revenue generated from the purchase of offsets is typically invested in environmentally friendly projects.

Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
Carbon Dioxide is one of the Greenhouse Gases which traps heat in the atmosphere. CO2 is created in different ways, but human activities like the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation have increased the natural concentration of this compound in recent years.

Carbon Emission
Emissions to the atmosphere principally from the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Increased atmospheric concentrations of CO₂ and other greenhouse gases trap more of the earth’s heat leading to the phenomenon known as global warming.

Carbon Footprint
A representation of the effect human activities have on the climate in terms of the total amount of greenhouse gases produced (measured in units of carbon dioxide).

Decompose 分解:
To rot or decay; to break down into simpler parts or elements.

Emissions 排放:
The release of gases, liquids and/or solids from any process or industry. Liquid emissions are commonly referred to as effluents.

Ecology 生态:
A branch of science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their environment.

Ecological Footprint
Measures human impact upon the environment - how much space or productive land is needed to support an individual’s lifestyle.

Eco-Spun
A smooth, supple fleece produced entirely from recycled beverage bottles.

Ecosystem
A group of living organisms that, along with their abiotic environment (eg. air, water, rocks), interact with each other over a period of time. Energy from the sun is used to feed this web of life.

F

Greenhouse Effect
The warming of the earth’s surface and lower atmosphere as a result of carbon dioxide and water vapour in the atmosphere.
