Recycling

  • Use rechargeable batteries wherever possible - you can even buy a solar powered charger!
  • Glass containers such as bottles and jars should be cleaned and any tops or corks removed before recycling.
  • Charity and community schemes are good places to donate or sell second hand clothes, toys and furniture.

Saving Energy

  • Refrigerators with a top or bottom freezer design can save you an additional 2-3% on your bill compared to a side-by-side design.
  • Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they aren't in use - most new electronic devices use electricity even when switched "off." Turn computers and printers off at the main switch.
  • Dirty aircon filters restrict airflow and can cause the system to run longer, increasing energy use. Clean filters monthly for maximum benefit.

Saving Water

  • Don't use your washing machine until you've got a full load. The average wash needs about 95 litres. A full load uses less water than 2 half loads.
  • Brushing your teeth with the tap running wastes almost 9 litres a minute. Rinse out from a tumbler instead.
  • Kettles should be filled with enough water for your needs but not to the brim. This will reduce your fuel bills too.
