UK Organic and Natural Skin Care brand Balance Me has created a range of Ecocert accredited aromatherapy products blended with pure essential oils. EcoAsia asked the co-founder and director of Balance Me, Rebecca Hopkins, how she balances the demands of running a business, keeping it eco-friendly and providing women with more green skincare options.

How Balance Me was born

Passionate about the power of natural aromatherapy products, the British sisters Rebecca and Clare Hopkins, founded Balance Me in late 2005. “We made bespoke gifts for a number of private clients through their well-being events business and when a major retailer requested 300 foot polishes for their press contacts & VIPs, Balance Me was born.” said Rebecca.

In 2006, they were joined by aromatherapist Sian Jones and together Balance Me has continued to develop a no-fuss daily skincare regime to suit all skin types and tastes to help keep skin looking, feeling and being healthy.

“The high grade essential oils and skin enrichers that we use work on three levels: aroma (there are lots of different ones to suit all tastes), skin benefits (cleansing, moisturising, hydrating, nourishing) and therapeutic properties (e.g. helping to combat dry skin complaints, prevent stretch marks etc). We also believe everyone deserves the chance to benefit daily from a clean, modern aromatherapy skincare range and we are priced accordingly.” Rebecca continued to stress that, “We have worked hard to create the best possible natural aromatherapy skincare offering and the Balance Me promise reflects our brand philosophy.”

Balance Me from within

Due to the concerns that have been raised over both parabens and petrochemicals, Balance Me strives to make products that are 100% natural. To offer customer a healthy and conscience choice of buying a results-driven product for which the whole range is certified minimum 98.7% from natural origin, with half being 100% natural.

“For this reason, we choose to have our products certified by Ecocert, the European organic and natural regulator and are extremely proud of this certification. Ecocert check and approve every single ingredient, formula, blending process, packaging and product label so our customer can be totally confident in our clean and green credentials.” When it comes to the matter of environmental issue, Rebecca, said proudly, “Everything we do and make reflects our ‘green’ and natural philosophy.  We look for the purest essential oils to put in our products and always consider the earth’s resources while doing so.”

In addition, they also support and work hard to develop good relationships with trusted UK suppliers who share their values, sourcing high grade essential oils and extracts through them from across Britain and indeed the world. Balance Me’s high quality washes don’t use harsh detergents such as sulphates to clean skin and to make soap lather, so customers can feel relief without turning to chemical nasties that can strip the skin of its natural oils while cleaning. A good example: Balance Me is working with one of their British suppliers to develop an organic benzoin resin essential oil from Cambodia for their best-selling hand cream. The brand had also removed sandalwood from one of their products in the early days because the team could not find a sustainable source.

The brand has always reviewing ways that they can become cleaner and greener, such as minimizing the brand packaging as to avoid needless waste because most of the invest has dedicated to select the best quality of the ingredients.

Balance Me keeps it simple

Understanding that the natural and organic beauty sector can be confusing to the consumer, Balance Me has vowed not to sell its customers umpteen different products. The brand would even welcome greater clarity and regulation within the beauty industry so that the consumer can truly see what a product or brand represents and then make an informed choice as to which is right for them.

The team is always reviewing ways that they can become cleaner and greener, such as minimising the brand packaging so as to avoid needless waste because most of the investment is dedicated to selecting the best quality ingredients. The brand has now developed bespoke PP bags that are recyclable for their travel and wash sets. Gift boxes are collectable to encourage customers to re-use them, e.g. to store buttons, cards etc. The team believe there are times when continued use or alternative use is more beneficial to the planet than actually re-cycling as it uses less energy!

Balance Me believes that “Life should be simple”, so does the consumer nowadays! Now Balance Me is available in SuperNature Singapore as well as Ecog Hong Kong (www.ecog.com).
